A New Expression of SAN
Beyond Scent: A New Chapter in Songkhla Old Town
Fragments of the South, collected and reimagined through a new perspective.
Nearly four years since its beginning, SAN Maison unveils its new flagship store in the heart of Songkhla Old Town, Southern Thailand. More than a new home for the contemporary Thai fragrance house, the space represents an evolution of SAN’s creative journey, expanding beyond scent into a world of flavor, art, design, and unexpected sensory encounters.
What began with a desire to reinterpret the memories and cultural heritage of Southern Thailand through fragrance has gradually evolved into a broader creative expression.
Our horizons have expanded, yet our direction has never been clearer: to celebrate the South, not by simply preserving its traditions, but by reimagining their place in contemporary life.
Beyond Fragrance: Exploring the South Through the Senses
Fragrance remains at the heart of SAN, but it is no longer the only language through which we tell our stories.
At the new SAN flagship, the narratives behind our fragrances find new expressions through signature beverages, Southern-inspired confections, and contemporary design objects.
Drawing from local ingredients, traditional recipes, craftsmanship, and the cultural influences that have shaped Southern Thailand, these creations explore how familiar stories can be experienced through different senses.
A memory once captured in scent might find another expression in flavor. A traditional craft might inspire an unexpected object. Each interpretation offers a different perspective on the same cultural landscape.
Together, they form a more expansive world of SAN, where the boundaries between fragrance, food, art, and design begin to dissolve.
A Contemporary Interpretation of Songkhla’s Architectural Heritage
The architecture of the new SAN flagship reflects this same philosophy of reinterpretation.
Situated within the historic setting of Songkhla Old Town, the building retains the distinctive silhouette of a Sino-European courtyard house, a reflection of the multicultural influences that have shaped the city’s architectural identity.
Within this familiar structure, SAN introduces its own design language: modern rustic, understated, and grounded in natural materials.
Aged timber, raw surfaces, tactile textures, and contemporary architectural details create a dialogue between past and present. Rather than reconstructing history, the design allows the character of the original architecture to coexist with a new creative identity.
The result is a space that feels both rooted in Songkhla and unmistakably SAN.
Art, Community, and the Living Heritage of Southern Thailand
Art plays an integral role in the new flagship experience, offering another perspective on the stories and identities that define the South.
Among the featured works is Nakorn Ok by contemporary Thai artist Navin Rawanchaikul, capturing the people, memories, and collective identity of the Songkhla Old Town community.
The installation connects the space to its surrounding neighborhood, celebrating the lives and stories that continue to shape the character of the city.
Another prominent feature is a suspended sculptural installation inspired by the Serd, the elaborate headpiece worn by Nora dancers, an iconic form of Southern Thai performing arts.
Reinterpreted through a contemporary sculptural language, the traditional silhouette takes on a new presence within the architecture, connecting cultural symbolism with modern design.
Together, these installations reflect SAN’s ongoing exploration of Southern heritage as something living, evolving, and open to new interpretations.
A Curated Sensory Experience at SAN Songkhla
Every element of the flagship has been thoughtfully considered as part of a larger narrative.
From the architecture and material palette to the fragrances, signature drinks, confections, design objects, and artworks, each encounter offers another way to discover the stories of Southern Thailand.
Some references are immediately familiar. Others unfold gradually through texture, taste, scent, or form.
Rather than presenting these experiences as separate disciplines, SAN brings them together within a shared creative world, inviting visitors to explore the connections between culture, memory, and contemporary design.
An Evolution of SAN
As SAN approaches its fourth year, the opening of our new flagship in Songkhla marks an important moment in our journey.
Our creative expression has expanded, but the intention that shaped SAN from the beginning remains unchanged: to collect fragments of Southern Thai heritage and imagine what they can become.
From fragrance to flavor, from craft to contemporary art, the new flagship is both a reflection of where we began and a glimpse of what lies ahead.
A new expression of SAN.
An invitation to experience the familiar, differently.
